Have you used adapters as well, or just cropped it a bit? (I mean, you shouldn't be able to fill the frame with 500mm).

I did not use any adapter. I cropped away about 25% of the dark around.
Some times it would be almost possible to fill the frame and that depends on the azimuth, the month of the year. At the time I shot it, the moon was just above my head and that means that the moon was at it’s longest distance from Earth as opposed to the horizon.
